Her Majesty, Jadis, Queen of Narnia (2006)
I got interested in making this costume after the 2005 movie came out, specifically because I didn't like any of Tilda Swinton's costumes. For one thing, why wasn't the White Witch wearing white? So I decided to do my own interpretation, based on the book.
Making the Crown and Wand
The costume really started with the crown. It's made from Christmas garland branches wrapped around a paper base. More garland forms the loops, which are intended to look like frost patterns. The tall crystals are from a chandelier.
I added a length of blue/white EL wire around the inside so it would be backlit. This is a great effect, but doesn't show up very well unless it's very dark. The battery wire runs down my back, under my hair. |

The wand was originally envisioned as more of a scepter. The runes on it are in a Sanskrit-inspired font, and read "Always winter, never Christmas." Later, the wand/scepter got permanently bent out of shape, so I had to replace it with a long icicle shaped wand. I painted the runes on the hem of the gown instead.
The gown is a floor model wedding gown; I suppose I should have made my own, but really, if you're going for "big white dress," and eBay is full of big white dresses, why go to the trouble? The mantle is a wool cape with fur trim around the collar; I added more fur around the bottom hem, and painted the entire thing with glitter paint.
