Susan, Duchess of Sto Helit (2007)
(from the Discworld Series, by Terry Pratchett)
Discworld costuming really emphasizes the problem with making a book character recognizable. Since Susan starts out as a student in a boarding school, I made that the basis for her original outfit. Later, I decided Susan and I had both gotten a bit older, so I replaced her school uniform with something more Victorian, to reflect her jobs as governess and schoolteacher.
The scythe started as a giant piece of foil-covered foam board, but it was absurdly awkward to carry around, so I later downsized it to a store-bought Halloween costume piece. |

Making the Death of Rats
The scythe and cape make her Death-like, and the black-streaked wild white hair were a good start, but I finally realized that what she really needed was a sidekick.
Death of Rats started as a muskrat skull (yes, you can mail order them--isn't the internet amazing?) on a barbie doll body. It only gets weirder from there. He rode in Susan's breast pocket, originally, then moved up to the top of the (downsized) scythe.
