It's a fun challenge to interpret cartoon clothing. Since cartoon people don't have to obey the same laws of physics that I do, their costumes don't always make sense as actual clothing. I often try to imagine that the outfit was there first, and that the artists are trying to draw a simplified or stylized version of the real thing. So instead of saying, "how do I make that fluffy bit?" I think, "Hm, I wonder what that fluffy bit is meant to represent? Feathers? Stuffing? Frayed fabric edges? What real piece of clothing was the artist trying to draw?"
